Electrical Plugs and Sockets

Electrical plugs and sockets are different from each other in voltage and current rating, shape, size, and connector type. Different standard systems of plugs and sockets are used around the world. Plugs and sockets became available to replace connections to light sockets with wall-mounted outlets. There are about 20 types in usual use around the world. Two main types of plugs are not-grounded and grounded. In the first model, plugs have two parallel blades and are rated 15 A at 125 volts. They provide no ground connection but will fit a grounding receptacle. The second type has two flat parallel blades too, and a ground (earth) pin. It is rated 15 A at 125 volts. The ground pin is longer than the line and neutral blades, so the device is grounded before the power is connected. Both current-carrying blades on grounding plugs are normally narrow since the ground pin enforces polarity. The type most commonly used in Europe, South America and Asia, is not-grounded or grounded with two pins. The socket is compatible with plug type.
